Income
from sales tax is important to Cathedral City, so new business
development and business retention is vital to the City’s future. A
number of new businesses have selected Cathedral City to be their new
home.
Sonic burger has reopened for
business after a recent fire. When it first opened (the Cathedral City
store is the only Sonic Burger in the area), the restaurant was so
popular it was difficult to find a place to park. After the fire,
Sonic worked closely with the City to expedite the re-building process
to allow the restaurant to reopen as quickly as possible – just a bit
over 10 weeks.
Reilly’s Irish Pub & Restaurant
(35-903 date Palm Drive) is another example of the City helping the
owner open the pub as quickly as possible.
Picanha Churrascaria opened
in early May in the Desert IMAX building on East Palm Canyon and
Cathedral Canyon Drive. The restaurant is a Brazilian barbeque where
waiters serve meat from long sword-like skewers.
In the auto world, in addition to
the huge expansion of the Toyota dealership,
Auto Zone,
specializing in newer pre-owned vehicles, also opened in May on Ramon
Road, east of Date Palm Drive. Arroyo Auto Repair received
preliminary approval for future construction from the Planning
Commission.
Various plans have been submitted
for the John Deere building located at Sunair Plaza and Bankside
Drive. It is anticipated that the business will sell landscaping and
irrigation equipment and supplies.
Wessman Development and retailers
from both the Canyon Plaza North and Canyon Plaza South shopping
centers will premiere their new “Saturdays @ Canyon Plaza South”, an
outdoor shopping extravaganza beginning May 3rd.
It will be a weekly event featuring
upscale outdoor bazaar, opening with 40 vendors with the potential of
growing to 125 vendors with unique and unusual items: art, antiques,
clothing, crafts fabrics, fresh organic produce, beverages and much
more. Furnishings, home goods, jewelry, liquidations, mid-century,
modern, and estate items are also planned. Vendors are both local and
from outside the area.
Stater Brothers Supermarket
opened its new “Blue Ribbon” full service store on at Vista Chino and
Landau in April. Stater Brothers is the largest privately owned
supermarket chain in Southern California with 162 stores in six
counties.
“Fresh ‘n Easy”, a subsidiary
of the British firm Tesco, plans to open a store on Date Palm Drive,
south of 30th Avenue. Tesco focuses on busy residents who want fresh
quality foods with the convenience of a smaller convenient store In
addition, it will offer time-saving packaged, ready to eat meals.
Plans for the new store will presented to the Planning Commission at
its May 7th meeting for approval of its design review application.
The Cathedral City Redevelopment
Agency also sponsors a Façade Improvement Program to help existing
businesses improve their appearance to attract more shoppers. The City
is looking for commercial/business partners along the Ramon Road
corridor in Cathedral City interested in improving and renovating
their signs, doors, windows, awnings, graphics, exterior light,
landscaping, decorative fencing, façade treatment, parking surface,
parking installation, among other improvements. All improvements must
meet the City’s Building Codes and design guidelines for the project
area and must provide make a substantial improvement to the business’s
appearance to be included in the program.
City Redevelopment Funds will
reimburse half of the costs for the improvements up to $615 per linear
feet for businesses that apply for the program and are approved.
