Pride and spirit covered a portion of Palm Canyon Drive during Cathedral City High School’s 2nd Annual Homecoming Parade on October 24.
Students and staff members from all of the city’s schools as well as Rancho Mirage and Della S. Lindley donned their duds from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s or ‘80s for the parade themed “Rockin’ Through the Decades.” City and chamber of commerce officials also participated in the event along with Grand Marshal Joe Velasquez, a former city councilman and owner of Cathedral Mason & Concrete.
Following the parade, school officials led a Homecoming rally including performances by the Cathedral City High Lions cheerleaders and Cathedral City High Marching Band along with introductions of Lions Coach Mitch Donnelly, the varsity football team and the members of the Homecoming Court and remarks by district, school and city officials.
“The spirit in Cathedral City is absolutely wonderful, and our band is outstanding,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lorri McCune, who added her gratitude to city officials.
“Without the support of the city, this parade would not happen.”
“We’re so proud to have all of you here,” Mayor Kathy DeRosa told the crowd of about 2,500. “Cathedral City is the spirit of the desert, and you are the spirit of Cathedral City High School.”
Cathedral City High Principal Guillermo Chavez introduced Velasquez and thanked him for his financial support of the school. He also introduced the members of the city council and Chamber Executive Director Mary Beth Hunt and Chairman of the Board Fred Bell and the principals of the 9 other participating schools.
“I want the thank the principals, administration and staff for supporting our parade,” Chavez said. “I also want to thank the local businesses and our parents for their donations to our floats.”
